Check out this presentation from Daniel Pink associated with motivation.  When someone asks, “why volunteer? this research gets at the intrinsic reasons that motivate us to do things for rewards that connect to our passion for personal meaning and not just for dollars and cents.  Pink shares that people are motivated by, “The desire to be self-directed. The will to master something. The hope to make a contribution. It’s all what Pink calls “the purpose motive.”
