Sudanese Refugee Starts National Service At Nitzana

Updated: Apr 3

Of Interest: HaAretz (25 August 2011) article about the first African refugee to start Israel’s pre-army national service program.   Tom Hassan is doing his national service at Nitzana, an educational youth village located just beyond the border with Egypt.  Nitzana offers a variety of educational programs that serve Israeli and Global Jews including disadvantaged Israeli youth and young adults from outside Israel.  Nitzana is also hosting a boarding school for African asylum seekers .

This summer, two skilled volunteers spent 10 days at Nitzana working with Israeli high school students who attended an English Camp focused on preparation for the English matriculation exam required for successful high school completion.   Roseli Ejzenberg and Gina Milano had the opportunity to not only interact with the students in the English Camp, but with other participants in Nitzana’s programs, including orphans from Darfur.

Read more about Gina and Roseli’s experiences at Nitzana in their blog post on the Skilled Volunteers for Israel blog.
